Chapter Ten
The drive was bitterly silent. It wasnât the kind of silence I liked. This gnawed at my bones. It hung in the air like suspended moments, all the things that had been left unsaid. One harsh word would bring it crashing down like giant icicles waiting for someone to walk under them. The stillness that clung to us was slow-moving poison in its nothingness. It cruelly made each breath tight and shallow, a heavy reminder that I was locked in the vehicle with a Lycan, a myth, a killer, a monster. The silence was the most terrifying part. I didnât know what he was thinking. But Iâd sooner drown in the silence than open my mouth. What could I say that wouldnât eat us up or throw Mr. Furry into a fit of rage? Now that I knew what he was, I didnât think heâd have to hide it from me any longer. Iâve never seen a Lycan in full form, only in drawingsâand perhaps in my one dream of the first crime scene. I didnât want to pick now, speeding down the highway, as the exact time to experience an up close and personal viewing.
âCan a Lycan drive?â I blurted out.
He glanced at me. He could sense my fear. He grinned and looked back to the road. âIâm not going to shift if thatâs what youâre scared of.â
âCan they, though, drive? Or we would wreck?â
âI think weâd wreck long before I found out if I could drive. Iâve never tried it. Shifting would take my attention away from the road. Weâd be in the ditch before I was done shifting. But it would be one hell of a ride until we were wrapped around a tree,â he answered, and I winced at the thought. I had died once, wrapped around a pole. He noticed and had the decency of looking bad. âPoor choice of words. Iâm not going to shift, no matter how angry I get.â
âWhat if I were a threat to you?â I asked.
âAre you asking if I would shift to defend myself against you?â He squeaked out the question like he didnât want me to answer. I nodded. His shoulders were hunched with disappointment. âAnyone else, Iâd shift part of my body, like my hands, and defend myself. But with you, no. I wouldnât shift to defend myself from you.â
âNot even if it meant I would kill you?â I donât know why I needed to know. I just did.
âIâd rather be dead than live and know I killed you to keep my own heart beating.â
I turned my eyes back to the road. âI wish I could say the same thing to you, Miguel.â
âWould you kill me?â He sounded surprised. I donât know why that came as one.
âIf I had to, yes,â I answered. I wanted him to understand the line I drew in the sand. I would kill him to save myself. Maybe I needed to hear myself say it out loud more than I needed him to hear it.
